Tiria – the falls

Taumarere here here riri
Te rere I Tiria
Te puna I Keteriki

This local whakatauaki (saying) talks about “the knitting of peoples when peace is made”. It goes on to explain the link with the elvers (baby eels) whose example of cooperation helped these people find peace, and includes the Waterfall at Tiria and the spring at Keteriki.

Tiria or “the falls” as the locals call them was once a favorite swimming hole for Moerewa Tamariki (children).

Unfortunately that is no longer possible because of various pollutants from Industry, Farms and Forestry poisoning the river.

It is an ongoing battle to have the waterways cleaned up...one that will continue as long as the pollution does.

Tiria is still one of the obstacles on the migratory route of Tuna Whakaheke (Silver bellied eel) on their return from the sea.
